Panels last 25 years. Your inverter probably won't.

Every quote you'll get in Bengaluru leads with the panel warranty — 25 years of linear performance, sounds reassuring, and it is. What rarely gets the same airtime is the inverter, the box that actually converts your panels' DC output into usable AC power for your home. Manufacturer warranties on string inverters typically run 5 to 10 years, while the panels sitting on your roof are rated to outlive it two or three times over. In practice, most residential inverters in Bengaluru's heat and humidity need attention or replacement somewhere between year 8 and year 12 — squarely inside your system's working life, and often after the standard warranty has quietly expired.

This isn't a defect in the technology. Inverters have moving parts — cooling fans, capacitors, relays — that panels simply don't, and they run hot in Bengaluru's peak-sun months. Knowing this upfront changes how you should read the fine print before you sign, not after something fails.

What's actually covered — and what isn't

SituationTypically covered?
Manufacturing defect within warranty periodYes — part replaced or repaired free
Fan or capacitor failure from normal ageing, in-warrantyUsually yes, if flagged before expiry
Damage from voltage surges without a surge protection device installedNo — most manufacturers exclude this explicitly
Water ingress where the inverter wasn't mounted per IP-rating guidelinesNo — improper installation voids the claim
Firmware tampering or unauthorised third-party repairNo — voids remaining warranty entirely
Failure after warranty period, no extended cover purchasedNo — full replacement cost is yours

That last row is the one that catches people out. An inverter that fails in year 9 of a 7-year warranty is not a warranty claim — it's an out-of-pocket repair or replacement, typically ₹15,000–₹35,000 depending on system size and inverter brand.

Common exclusions worth reading before you sign

  • No surge protection device (SPD). Bengaluru's pre-monsoon lightning activity is real, and a surge-related failure without an SPD installed is one of the most common claim rejections installers report.
  • Improper earthing. If your installer cut corners on earthing to save cost, that's grounds for denial — and it's not something you can verify by looking at the inverter later.
  • Installation outside the manufacturer's environmental spec. Mounting an inverter in direct sun or an unventilated utility space accelerates ageing and can be cited to deny a claim.
  • Using an unauthorised service technician. Even a well-meaning local electrician opening the unit for a "quick fix" can void what's left of your cover.

Is extended warranty worth the extra spend?

Most brands sold in Bengaluru — Growatt, Luminous, Waaree, Deye — offer extended warranty add-ons taking cover from 5 years to 10, usually for ₹2,000–₹5,000 depending on inverter capacity. Run the math simply: a mid-life inverter replacement without cover costs several times that. Unless your household has strong reason to believe the system will be replaced or the home sold well within the base warranty window, the extension is usually the cheaper bet, especially for string inverters in the 3–8 kW range most Bengaluru homes install.

Where your AMC does and doesn't help

An annual maintenance contract typically covers site visits, cleaning, and diagnostic checks — labour, essentially. It does not cover the cost of a replacement part still needed once your manufacturer warranty lapses. Think of AMC and inverter warranty as two separate layers: one keeps someone checking on your system regularly, the other pays for the part if it fails. You want both, and you want to know exactly where each one's coverage ends before you need either.

A homeowner in Indiranagar we spoke with last year had a textbook version of this gap: a 5 kW system installed in 2019, a 5-year base inverter warranty that lapsed in 2024, and a fan failure in early 2026 that took the inverter down entirely. No extended warranty had been purchased at installation. The repair — a full inverter swap, since the model was discontinued — came to just over ₹22,000, paid entirely out of pocket. The panels, still well within their 25-year cover, were never the issue.
